Top Home Technology Trends to Watch from the CEDIA Expo
The 2019 CEDIA Expo was a whirlwind of fun and excitement! Lots of shiny new home technology to see and test out and lots of time spent bonding and learning as a team. The CEDIA Expo is THE expo for home technology professionals. It attracts over 20,000 professionals in the industry to come learn and explore hundreds of vendors on the expo floor. This is one of the many ways we keep our finger on the pulse of the industry to ensure we are delivering the most innovative and high-quality products.
Here are the top trends that caught our eye at CEDIA this year.
Forget 4K. Let’s Talk about 8K!
Want to have the latest and greatest displays in your home or office? 8K is where it’s at. 8K displays are extremely detailed in color and deliver a stronger sensory experience. The high resolution allows for each pixel to be indistinguishable to the human eye when viewed at a typical distance from the screen. In a word: stunning.
Speaking of TVs…
Future Automation had some pretty impressive automated lifts on display. This one is just too cool not to share. Imagine having a TV built into your deck. Now you can.

Lighting is Hot Right Now.
CEDIA exhibitors had more than lighting control on display this year. Many of the major lighting distributors had lots of innovative fixtures and cool LED lighting solutions. Tuneable lighting was also big on the CEDIA floor. Tuneable lights allow you to go from warm to cool white without changing the bulb. This kind of lighting control helps you set the right light for your circadian rhythm – depending on the time of day. Lutron was a big player in this segment as was Savant.
We also saw one vendor, Broan, with a UV lights for the bathroom that kill bacteria when in use. We suspect this trend will grow in 2020.
There was a whole Wellness Pavilion at CEDIA for vendors whose products focused on biophilia and wellness in the home. Biophilia is the human desire for connection with nature (more on biophilia here) because we feel less stressed when we’re close to nature.
CE Pro actually coined a term for this market segment: “biodigitry.” It refers to simulations of nature through electronic or digital means, for example human-centered lighting and artificial skylights.
Products in the pavilion included air purification, circadian lighting, aromatherapy, and sounds of nature.
One player in this space was Lutron, who we carry in our showroom. Lutron’s Ketra Lighting System replicates both sunlight and firelight. Another cool vendor was Savant, who has an app for programming your circadian day. You tell it your rhythm and it maps out your day, deciding on the light levels, color, and temperature depending on the time of day.
There was a lot of talk around remote support at CEDIA. As we incorporate more and more technology into our homes, there is an increasing need for a remote support solution. Luckily, we have one at Livewire. It’s called InVision and it offers 24/7/365 support.
Finally, we’d be remiss to not mention Sonos and their three new offerings: Sonos Move, Sonos One SL, and Sonos Port. Sonos has introduced a whole new level of home audio this year and we are so excited to be carrying all three products! Learn more about them here.
Now that we’re back from CEDIA, look for us to have more products in the lighting category – to include fixtures. We’ll also have 8K TVs and all the new Sonos products. Give us a call if you’re ready to add more technology to your home.
