The new Amp Multi landed on our bench and we could not wait to crack it open. It is an installer-exclusive amp built to run four zones from a single box, and Sonos told us to give you the honest version. So here it is: what surprised us, what it changes, and what it means for your home or business.
Why we were excited to open this one
Whole-home and whole-building audio usually means a rack full of amplifiers, one or two zones at a time, each with its own box, mount, and set of wires. It works, but it eats space and it adds points of failure. The Amp Multi is Sonos taking a swing at all of that in a single unit.
Where the standard Sonos Amp drives one zone with two outputs at 125W per channel and adds HDMI ARC for TV sound, the Amp Multi drops HDMI entirely and goes all-in on distributed audio: eight outputs, up to four independent zones, still 125W per channel with every channel driven. One Multi can replace up to four standard Amps, and you can bond outputs to run as many as 32 architectural speakers across custom zones.

Audio tech and tuning
Cleaner power, real tuning control
Instead of standard Class D, the Multi uses Gallium Nitride (GaN) power with Post-Filter Feedback (PFFB). In plain terms, GaN runs cooler and switches cleaner in a smaller chassis, and PFFB pulls the output filter into the correction loop so frequency response stays flat no matter what speaker load you hang on it. The measurable result Sonos cites is output noise dropping from 54.4 microvolts down to 28.7 microvolts. Quieter background, cleaner sound.
The part we care about most as installers is ProTune. The standard Amp leans on Trueplay with Sonos speakers. ProTune gives you a full 10-band parametric EQ per channel, plus delay, gain trim, and filter controls, for any 8-ohm passive speaker. That means we can properly dial in high-end architectural speakers to your specific rooms, not just the Sonos catalog.

The standard Amp is half-rack width, which usually means custom shelves and extra hardware to mount cleanly. The Multi is full-rack width with an optional 2U mount designed with integrated airflow, and it delivers roughly 50% rack-space savings for the same number of zones.
