Sony’s Cognitive Intelligence is a Television Game Changer

Image processing has always been at the heart of Sony’s TV designs. Now, they’re doubling down on that reputation with the Cognitive Processor XR for their lineup of Bravia XR televisions. The new image processor will focus on bringing “cognitive intelligence” to the picture. This means it will cross-analyze color, contrast, and details simultaneously and pick out the most important elements of whatever you’re watching.

You’ve heard of smart TVs, but this is a whole new ballgame.

What Is Cognitive Intelligence?

Just think about how you view the world. When we see or hear something we don’t ‘think’ about what we’re looking at or consciously acknowledge the process. We perceive the world based on the information coming from our eyes and ears at the same time. Our brain does all the work for us!

Conventional AI can only detect and analyze elements like color, contrast, and detail individually. Cognitive Processor XR can cross-analyze every element at once, just as our brains do. The new processor can analyze and understand unprecedented amounts of data, and use it to optimize every pixel, frame, and scene, producing what Sony considers the most lifelike picture and sound the company has ever delivered.

Essentially, the processor focuses the same way our eyes do. It will detect the focal point in each scene and enhance every detail of the object. This means the object will stand out with a natural sense of depth, just as in the real world.

A Real Game Changer

To create this closer-to-reality feeling, the Cognitive Processor XR divides the screen into hundreds of thousands of zones. It then recognizes individual objects in these zones better than ever before. If your TV was displaying a flower, it would recognize that it needs to draw attention to everything about it. It’ll enhance the color of the flower, highlight the water droplets, and focus on the sunshine pattern as it moves across the frame. All while simultaneously projecting audio from the rustle of the trees in the wind.

In a close-up shot, for example, the XR chip will focus on delivering a realistic skin tone. When the camera moves behind an actor it’ll look for other elements, like the way a sign is lit up in the background, or smoke wafting up from the street.

The Cognitive Processor XR will also help Sony’s 8K performance. Given the dearth of content in that resolution, Sony’s 8K Master Series Z9J TVs will rely on XR upscaling to help HD and 4K content take advantage of those extra pixels. This application is particularly useful because it allows the processor to focus on the parts of the image that matter. This saves the kind of processing power it would need to optimize an entire 8K screen in real-time.

Sound Quality to Match

When you have a picture quality this amazing, there’s no question the sound has to match up. The Cognitive Processor XR also analyzes and vectors where the sound is coming from visually. It’ll then focus the audio projection to make sure that your eyes and ears are in sync with the viewing experience.

The TV panel microscopically vibrates while the sound is amplified via built-in subwoofers. All audio is converted up to  5.1.2 channel surround sound and the televisions have two tweeters on the sides to deliver the best possible audio for everything from movie soundtracks to streaming playlists.

With sound processing that mimics the human ear, pinpointing where sound is coming from, and placing it in the right spot on the screen, you’ll feel totally immersed in every scene.

How Can You Get It?

The Cognitive Processor XR ties together Sony’s entire line of premium TV offerings. In addition to the Z9J mentioned earlier, the Cognitive Processor XR will also power Sony’s Master Series A90J and A80J 4K OLED TVs, as well as its X95J and X90J 4K LED sets.

It’s a lot to take in, but when you watch a Sony BRAVIA XR TV you’ll instantly understand. Every TV with Sony Cognitive Processor XR onboard has astounding realism and offers a completely natural feel for color, contrast, clarity, and motion.
